Lenovo CEO Gifts $1M to UNC
A $1 million gifts by Lenovo chairman and CEO Yuanqing Yang will fund a program aimed at recognizing biomedical researchers at UNC.
This week, while in town for an executive leadership meeting, Yang met with the first three researchers tapped for what’s being called the Yang Family Biomedical Scholars Award. They’ll be able to use the cash at their discretion for biomedical research projects at the UNC School of Medicine.
The inaugural recipients are Jonathan Berg, an associate professor of genetics and medicine; Maureen Su, associate professor of pediatrics, microbiology and immunology; and Yisong Wan, associate professor of microbiology and immunology. All three are also members of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Su is a member of the Thurston Arthritis Research Center and the Inflammatory Disease Institute.
William Roper, dean of the UNC School of Medicine and CEO of UNC Health Care, says the school is “very grateful” for Yang’s generosity.
“He has a proven track record of inspiring innovation in his business, and he is demonstrating that commitment through this gift, as well,” he says. “It will support our most talented young researchers as they make important biomedical discoveries with the aim of helping the people of North Carolina and beyond.”
The award, according to a release from UNC, aims to establish a community of UNC’s brightest and most promising young tenured medical faculty.
“The persistence, hard work, and focus of these researchers make so many other great breakthroughs possible,” says Yang via prepared statement. “This year, Aziz Sancar, a UNC researcher, won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, so perhaps we can inspire the same level of achievement in other fields as well."
The $1 million gifts funds $75,000 per scholar, with one to three scholars expected to be named for the next four years.
